Rich in History

          erre Haute" is French for "high ground."  Established in 1818 near the location of Fort Harrison, Terre Haute soon became an early "Gateway to the West" during the nation's westward expansion, and quickly gained national standing during the Industrial Age. It is the Birthplace of the contoured Coca-Cola Bottle.

The Arts Scene

           usic. Fine arts. Live theater. Public art installations. Terre Haute has it all. The Swope Art Museum's impressive permanent collection includes more than 2,500 works of great American art from the 19th century to the present. The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra is Indiana's longest continuously running professional orchestra. Wabash Valley Art Spaces' public sculptures dot the landscape, and the Community Theater of Terre Haute boasts an active performance schedule. And there's so much more to Terre Haute's creative culture!​

Recreation Exploration

       erre Haute & Vigo County boast an incredible parks system with abundant indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities. For the active lifestyle, there are more than 20 miles of paved trails, and even more nature trails, bike trails and footpaths within public parks, Wabashiki Fish & Wildlife Area, and Griffin Bike Park for mountain biking enthusiasts. And Hulman Center, Hatfield Hall, The Mill and many more venues offer live events and performances.

Higher Ed

   igo County is home to four higher education institutions, including Indiana State University; Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, consistently ranked the No. 1 engineering school in the nation; Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College; and Ivy Tech Community College.
